Oh God of earth and altar è una poesia di Chesterton. E' noto che gli Iron Maiden nel 1983 ne avevano utilizzato la prima strofa per la loro Revelations.



Bruce Dickinson, il cantante, aveva imparato la poesia da piccolo a scuola. Questa poesia è spesso cantata su un brano tradizionale inglese musicato da Vaughan Williams. Si tratta del Larghetto Van Demien's Land, il terzo studio dei suoi Six Studies in English Folk Songs.

Lo scorso dicembre Bruce Dickinson si è esibito insieme ai Jethro Tull in un concerto di beneficienza presso la Canterbury Cathedral di Kent ed ha cantato, credo per la prima volta in pubblico, non la versione degli Iron Maiden ma quella completa di Chesterton.
