Dear Mr. President,

Dear Mr. President,

I am one of those against the war. I am also a rather old (65) European. But I am not against America. On the contrary I rather love this country, its people and their peculiar character, its grandiose spaces (I drove across twice, once alone) even to a point its ruthlessness. Great countries make great mistakes. History will judge.

What I deeply resent morally and personally is your use of the name of God. I am not a believer, but the idea of God belongs to everybody. You speak as if God were on your side, so do Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden. But God cannot be on one side. You might say that they are different gods, but this very idea is terrible, if you think about it. Besides you and the Pope in Rome worship the same God, but he is getting completely different signs. I find this entire idea of calling upon God to justify one's decisions almost blaspheme, and in the end rather sissy. "I am doing this not on my own, but because God supports me". So if you win you take all the honours because God is not there stealing the stage. If you loose he looses with you and gets half of the blame. And we never have a definite word from Him on where He actually stands.

Please Mr. President, go about your terrible business of waging war. Maybe you are doing the right thing for your country, if not for the rest of us, who knows? I do not believe so but we all make mistakes. But please be your self and leave the name of God for the lips of those who are dying and suffering.
