Vogliamo andare tutti dal Papa?

Vogliamo andare tutti dal Papa?: "
Cari amici,

Morganti colpisce ancora. Ora tocca a L'Incredulità!

Morganti colpisce ancora. Ora tocca a L'Incredulità!: "
Ancora Buona Pasqua a tutti.

An Easter Reflection on the Catholics in Ireland

An Easter Reflection on the Catholics in Ireland: "
The Piercing of Jesus' Heart
Pieter Pauwel Reubens
.
Timing is everything, as Shakespeare once said. How apt then are the comments of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams concerning the church in Ireland, an unfortunate echo of the Establishment view. To say that our church 'has lost all credibility' has, in a simple wave of hand, reduced our Christian witness to naught. It seems that all we are fit for is to hang, condemned and despised, on the cross. But we are not alone!
.
Like a sapling he grew up in front of us
like a root in arid ground
a thing despised and rejected by men
a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering
he was despised and we took no account of him.
.
And yet ours were the sufferings he bore,
ours the sorrows he carried.
But we, we thought of him as someone punished,
struck by God, and brought low.
Yet he was pierced through for our faults,
crushed for our sins.
On him lies a punishment that brings us piece,
and through his wounds we are healed.
.
The next words of Isaiah, read we had all gone astray like sheep, a fitting description of our human condition and no doubt for the sins of some clergy in Ireland. However, unlike the earthly divines, we ask the Lord to look not on our sins but on the faith of your church! This is why, contrary to Dr. Williams, our credibility ought to sourced from our normative beliefs not our positive failings. This requires the humility to meet our Lord at eye level as he falls to His knees carrying our cross and to reject the idolatrous temptation to create our own religion or mold it to the fashions of sneering goats.

And so the trial by media of the catholics in Ireland continues! But let us not lose heart! We are following in the footsteps of our Saviour. In the company of the good thief, we cry out 'Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom!'

St Patrick, St. Brigid and all the martyr saints of Ireland, pray for us!

Embracing the Cross

Embracing the Cross: "
And bearing his own cross,
he went forth to a place called the Place of Skull,
in the Hebrew, Golgotha where they crucified him.
~-~-~-~-~
.
Jesus was not only sentenced to death, but to perhaps the most cruel from of death imaginable. The Romans were not the inventors of crucifixion, but they meted it out very generously. So often did they use it that the vertical pole of the cross was left in fair numbers in the ground as a gruesome decor of the outskirts of cities and towns of the vast Roman Empire.
.
From the tribunal the victim had to carry the horizontal bar on which he was to hang, with arms nailed or tied to it. Such a bar was put on the shoulders of Jesus. The one who spoke of his yoke as easy to bear, took up a yoke of indescribable pains.
.
Jesus showed no reluctance which is a resistance. Even in the Garden of Gethsemane he did not resist to say that his Father's will be done, no matter what. No trace in him of rejecting even the mere thought of suffering, not even the thought of the torture of crucifixion. Already scourged, his head bore the imprints of a crown of thorns that might have ripped one of the arteries in his temples. A bloodstained wretch he looked every inch, who already had spent a whole night on his feet and was subjected to trumped-up charges, buffeting, taunting and vilification by the vile. He must have now been at the point of exhaustion. Far more exhausting tortures lay just ahead of him.
.
As he grabbed that beam, his hands and fingers must have acted with a heroic desire which is inconceivable to us humans. We even fail to see that when we hold on to something delightful, we are held in its grip. A fateful grip indeed, when it is the desire of our eyes, or the urging of our body, or our pride of life.
.
May we be released from such bondage by letting Jesus gain hold of us! All we have to do is take up our crosses with an eye on him as he embraces his infinitely heavier cross.
