The purpose of the project is to map the way in which changing conceptions of the self reshape a range of social and cultural practices, from economic enterprise to spirituality and education. Historic and enduring conceptions of the self, developed in Western thought from Descartes onwards, promulgated and upheld an essentialist account of the first person narrative of individual experience.
